About Ayurveda
Ayurveda means “knowledge of life” — a system of medicine over five thousand years old.
Individual Health
Every person is born with a unique constitution (prakriti), so Ayurveda treats the individual, not only the disease.
The Five Elements
Earth, water, fire, air and space are the building blocks of everything in nature, including our body.
The Three Doshas
Vata, Pitta and Kapha run the body's functions. Health is their balance; disease starts when they go out of balance.
A harmonious interaction of many parts within the whole: mind, soul and senses filled with a lasting sense of Self, wellness and even bliss.
Ayurveda: the knowledge of life
Ayurveda literally means “knowledge of life” and its scope is truly no less encompassing. While the tradition is thought to be over five thousand years old, it remains as relevant as ever, and it comes alive every day as people around the world use its timeless wisdom in their daily lives.
Focusing on individual health
Each of us is born with a completely personal blueprint for optimum health: our constitution. No two constitutions are exactly alike, so no two people can have precisely the same expression of ideal health. That is why Ayurveda is fundamentally opposed to one-size-fits-all remedies and places the focus firmly on you, the individual.
Even amid stress, anxiety and chronic disease, Ayurveda offers elegant tools to assess the degree of imbalance, find its root, and begin reclaiming our health.
The Five Elements
The fundamental building blocks of nature. Every substance, every cell, contains all five, though in any given substance one or two elements usually predominate.

Earth

Water

Fire

Air

Ether
Like increases like, opposites balance
Ayurveda describes every substance or experience through twenty qualities, arranged as ten pairs of opposites.
- HeavyLight
- Slow (Dull)Sharp (Penetrating)
- ColdHot
- OilyDry
- SmoothRough
- DenseLiquid
- SoftHard
- StableMobile
- GrossSubtle
- Cloudy (Sticky)Clear
The Three Doshas
Vata, pitta and kapha are present in everyone, in a ratio unique to each person. All three are needed for the body to function, but if they build up beyond healthy limits they can wreak havoc on our health.
Vata
Air + EtherThe energy of movement and impulse, creativity and connection.
Breathing, heartbeat, muscle movement, nerve impulses, sensory perception, communication, flexibility and joy.
Fear, anxiety, ungroundedness, poor circulation, constipation, dry skin, cracking joints, insomnia, twitches and tremors.
Pitta
Fire + WaterThe energy of digestion and transformation.
Appetite, digestion, absorption, assimilation, intelligence, charisma, courage and ambition.
Anger, jealousy, inflammation, excess heat, heartburn, loose stools, migraines, rashes, bleeding disorders and poor sleep.
Kapha
Water + EarthThe energy of structure and cohesion, grounding and stability.
Nourishment, growth, lubrication, regeneration, fluid balance, strength, stamina, memory and compassion.
Attachment, lack of motivation, heaviness, excess sleep, depression, sluggish metabolism, congestion and water retention.
Your nature, and your present state
A seasoned Ayurvedic practitioner reads both to find the root cause of any imbalance and decide how balance can best be restored.
Prakriti · constitution
The particular combination of vata, pitta and kapha set at conception and cemented at birth. It is your blueprint for perfect health and shapes your physique, habits, likes and dislikes, mental and emotional character, and your vulnerabilities to disease.
Vikriti · current state
The present level of the doshas in your system. It shifts with climate, season and stage of life, and with daily routine, diet, exercise, relationships and stress. It is often more important, because it shows which doshas need to be pacified right now.
Applying the energy of opposites
Whether we are softening an innate vulnerability or correcting an active imbalance, we steer the body in the right direction with opposite qualities.
A person with aggravated pitta returns to balance by reducing what provokes it (hot, sharp, light, liquid, spreading and oily) and by favouring the cool, slow, heavy, dense and stable. With acid indigestion and a short temper, for example, we would use cooling, calming foods and herbs and more slow, relaxed moments through the day.
A warm-hearted welcome as you begin to explore the world of Ayurveda. We hope you find it as inspiring as we do, and that we can support and serve you in your process of discovery.
Universal practices that benefit everyone

- Following an Ayurvedic daily routine
- Cleaning the tongue upon waking
- Daily yoga or meditation

General principles are a good start, but a personal consultation lets Ayurveda support your specific, changing needs.
